Russia and Turkey to Collaborate on Combating Crime-Related Crypto Transactions

According to the Tass news agency, Igor Krasnov, the Russian Federation’s Prosecutor General, and Bekir Bozdag, the Turkish Minister for Justice, have signed a two-year program of cooperation between their respective departments. High-ranking officials met at the Turkish capital.

According to the report, cybercrime is one of the areas in which the sides intend to coordinate their efforts. This includes cases involving the criminal use of virtual assets and cryptocurrencies. Krasnov highlighted the Russian experience in this field after signing the agreement.

Russia has developed the appropriate judicial and investigative practices, the legislation regarding digital assets is being updated and the central bank’s digital ruble is being piloted. We all have something to offer.

Krasnov also mentioned a draft convention to combat the misuse of high-tech in criminal activity, which was submitted to the United Nations last January. He stressed that Russia’s proposal was to criminalize a broad range of acts,’since such technology are widely used in order to promote extremist views and attempt to influence the minds of ordinary citizens.

According to the Russian Prosecutor, the West wants to reduce cybercrime understanding to a small number of computer crimes. This, however, doesn’t reflect the core of the problem.

Russia has been subject to increasing sanctions from the West as a result of its ongoing invasion in Ukraine. Russia’s ability to use crypto assets to bypass the restrictions that have severely restricted Moscow’s access global markets and finances was also targeted. Russian authorities are now considering legalizing cryptocurrency settlements in cross-border commerce.

Although payments with Russian Mir cards were restricted in many countries, several Turkish banks still processed them. Under U.S. pressure, two of these lenders stopped operations with Mir. According to Turkish media reports President Recep Tayyip Erdan has suggested a new payment system with Russia as an alternative.
